In his 20 years of practice, Michael Carr is best known for his ground-breaking expertise in the areas of workers' compensation subrogation and employer liability. Mike was the primary drafter of the 2000 amendment that codified employer liability under Lambertson and the employer's right to "waive and walk" to avoid exposure beyond workers' compensation. Mike has been involved in numerous trials and appeals in this area including Tyroll, Jackson, and more recently in Zurich v. Bjelland and Alsaker. Mike has been on the editorial committee of Minnesota Defense since 1996 and has presented at numerous seminars and authored numerous articles for lawyers, insurance groups and self-insureds, primarily on litigation, contracts, insurance, employment and workers' compensation subrogation. Mike spent many years as an investigator for the Fourth Judicial District Legal Ethics Board and recently joined the Professionalism Committee of the Minnesota State Bar Association. He has also served as a mediator or a neutral arbitrator in dozens of cases. Last year, Mike was one of only 31 lawyers of the over 16,000 lawyers in Minnesota who was nominated and voted by his peers to be a Super Lawyer in the "General Litigation" category by Minnesota Law & Politics and Mpls-St. Paul Magazines.
Mike is a former elementary school teacher, camp director, scout leader and canoe guide. He and his wife, Ann, are very involved with their three children and Mike has coached and served on many boards for their sporting activities. Mike has done several volunteer activities including when he monitored micro-loan programs in Guatemala with World Vision, helped paint an elementary school in Manzanilla, assisted in re-building a fire damaged home in Appallachia, taught human rights to junior high school students, escorted blind adults for the Society for the Blind, and participated in the big brother program. Mike is presently on the executive committee of the Equipalife board which is a non-profit organization providing life-changing equipment to people with disabilities.
